Though the Essanay company predated the Keystone firm by nearly seven years, most of Essanay's post-1913 comedies strove to emulate the more popular Keystone farces. The "hero" of The Heiress was the appropriately yclept Billy Broke, a handsome but impoverished man about town. In need of a great deal of money in a hurry, Billy is delighted to discover that an "heiress" has arrived in town. Dressing to the nines, Billy rushes over to the girl's home to propose marriage -- only to discover that the heiress is well under the age of consent. Truth to tell, she's only three weeks old.
