Prominent actor/director Francis Ford played the title role in the multi-reel historical drama The Heart of Lincoln. Co-starring with Ford was his wife, Grace Cunard, cast as Betty, the daughter of a Southern Colonel staying in Washington at the outbreak of the Civil War. Once the shooting begins, the Colonel is summoned to his regiment. Months later, he receives word that his daughter, still in Washington, has fallen seriously ill. Donning Union garb, the colonel makes his way through Northern lines, only to be captured as a spy and sentenced to be shot. Desperately, the colonel's wife receives an audience with President Lincoln, begging the Great Man to spare her husband's life. Years later, Francis Ford's brother John Ford would direct Young Mr. Lincoln, in which Francis showed up in a bit role as a drunken juror.
