Filmed in scenic Chicago, Selig's The Grafter was a case study in human greed and gullibility. When a $500 reward is posted for the return of a valuable watch, the titular grafter purchases several cheap timepieces then goes to work on the sidewalks. He approaches a number of pedestrians, asking if the watch he is holding is the one that is missing, suggesting that it is worth many times the $500. Each of the "suckers," assuming he's getting a bargain, pretends to be the owner of the missing watch and ponies up the necessary money. By the time his victims have caught on to the scam, the Grafter has skipped off merrily for parts unknown.
