Vitagraph's The Fisherman begins as the title character and his young son head out to sea. A storm arises, destroying their tiny fishing vessel. The father is able to save himself, but his son disappears from view. Watching from shore, the fisherman's wife climbs into a small rowboat and launches a search for her missing boy. The search proves futile, and there is nothing for the fisherman and his wife to do but mourn their loss. A happy ending comes out of left field when the son is rescued by the Coast Guard. The exterior shots in The Fisherman are far more convincing than the film's studio mock-ups (in which the rain blows in one direction, and the sails in another!)
