This brief documentary was shipped out by Edison as a companion feature to A Western Night. Despite the promise held out by its title, the film offers very little in the way of fire-fighting thrills. The New York firemen are shown going through their standard drills, sliding down fire poles, and scaling lofty ladders. They are also shown in full firefighting regalia, putting out a staged blaze. The best scenes were shot along New York Harbor, as the brigade's fireboats chugged by and demonstrated their "dousing" capacity. Well photographed, The Fire Department of New York City could have been just a shade more exciting.
