No relation to the 1925 Rudolph Valentino picture of the same name, the 1918 The Eagle is essentially a sagebrush Robin Hood effort. Monroe Salisbury plays The Eagle, a handsome highwayman who robs from the rich and gives to the poor (surely he skims off a <I>little<?I> for himself). Edna Earle co-stars as Lucy, the girl who loves The Eagle despite his outlaw status. In a variation of a familiar plot device, it is Lucy who gallops to The Eagle's rescue when he is condemned to hang. The Eagle was directed by former D.W. Griffith assistant Elmer Clifton, who demonstrated that he'd learned plenty from "the master."
