Pathe's The Dog Pickpocket is thematically similar to the concurrently released Eclipse comedy The Sleuth and the Wig. On the orders of its Fagin-like master, a well-trained dog snatches purses and pocketbooks from a number of Parisian pedestrians. The pooch also does a brisk traffic in stolen cigars, which he dutifully returns to his master along with the rest of the loot. The "story" is never really resolved, indicating that the filmmakers merely wanted to show of the talents of the film's canine protagonist. Dog Pickpocket was little more than a "filler," but a good one.
