Vitagraph's The Diver's Remorse was considered a superior example of old-fashioned melodrama. A young deep-sea diver takes advantage of his partner's absence to make a pass at his partner's wife. When she spurns his attentions, the vengeful diver begins plotting his partner's demise. Cutting the partner's air supply, the diver leaves the poor fellow to his fate but then suffers the pangs of conscience. With the now-repentant diver leading the way, a Coast Guard submarine rescues the drowning partner from the bottom of New York harbor. With the exception of the obviously faked underwater scenes, The Diver's Remorse was filmed entirely on location, utilizing a genuine sub for the final segment.
