Corinne Griffith faces a post-Victorian moral dilemma in this Vitagraph drama. New England businessman John Lawson (Robert Gaillard) is incapacitated by a car accident and his wife, Ruth (Griffith), goes to New York to provide for them both. She meets Lory Williams, a showgirl (Florence Deshon), and searches for work on the stage. With the help of theatrical manager Rudy Rayburn (David Herblin), Ruth achieves stardom. Rayburn, however, expects her to "pay the price" for his efforts, and Ruth decides to leave everything behind and return home. But just then she gets a telegram informing her that her husband can be saved only through an expensive operation. So she returns to Rayburn, ready to give herself to him. Rayburn realizes that he honestly loves Ruth, so he gives her the money with no strings attached. Lawson is cured, but he refuses to believe that Ruth is blameless and starts divorce proceedings. Ruth turns to Rayburn, who assures her that he will be waiting for the moment she is free so they can marry.
