This Russian-made drama, based on the story by Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin, features some beautiful shots of rural Russia. Nicolai Orloff, a horse dealer, falls in love with his housekeeper, Glasha Anotonova (Nadya Lesienka). Glasha dominates him and tells him how to run his affairs. When his daughter, Sonia (Sophie Karabana), returns home from school she finds that her father has become a tyrant, and Glasha is hostile towards her. Sonia turns to a neighbor, Prince Alexis, for companionship, but Glasha -- who wants the prince for herself -- tries to destroy the relationship. The housekeeper's scheming and lying finally results in her murder. The prince is accused of killing her and things look bad for the young couple. But then it is revealed that Glasha was murdered by an angry peasant woman. She, like many of the peasants, were upset at the treatment they were receiving from Orloff, and they all knew that Glasha was to blame.
