This lyrical tale of romance and tragedy was made in Europe. Wood carver Eril Arden (Roy Langdon) has a poetic soul. One day, Vera Dawson, a beautiful American girl (Gertrude Shelbourne) comes to the little Swiss town where he dwells. He falls in love with her instantly, but unfortunately his feelings are not returned. Vera, in fact, does not realize the depth of his feelings and she tries unsuccessfully to discourage him. In despair over his inability to win her, Eril finally commits suicide by drowning himself in a lake. His father Lawrence, a hermit (Edwin Brackett), goes mad with grief and is locked away. When he gets out of the asylum, he seeks out Vera. Using hypnotic powers, he lures her to the water to drown. The spirit of Eril rises up and insists that Vera is blameless. She is rescued by her new husband, and Lawrence throws himself in the water to join his son.
