The Selig company's first release for September 1909 was the heart-wrenching melodrama The Blight of Sin. Things get under way as a young wife prepares to leave her husband and daughter to sail away with her lover. Her decision is not entirely unmotivated: her husband is an incorrigible gambler, who has squandered his family's hard-earned dollars. Upon learning of his wife's desertion, the husband chases after her, switching from a horse to a rowboat along the way. Catching up with his wife, the husband discovers that her lover is the same man who cheated him out of his savings at the gambling tables. A climactic fire at sea brings husband and wife back together in a spectacular fashion.
