Produced in France by the Gaumont company, The Astrologer was yet another "trick" film in the Georges Melies tradition. As the Astrologer gazes into the heavens, the face of the moon dissolves into the countenance of his pretty sweetheart. One moment later, the girl transforms into a bear. The bear then gives way to a wreath of (hand-tinted) color flowers. The Astrologer plucks the flowers from the moon then drapes them around his neck. Instantly the bouquet changes into a snake. Within a few short years, the gimmick-for-gimmick's-sake film, of which The Astrologer is a prime example, would lose favor with the increasingly sophisticated film-going audience.
