Although George Marshall was credited with directing this popular action serial, headstrong leading lady Ruth Roland had the final say on every take. A former two-reel comedienne, Roland was known as the queen of Hollywood serials (Pearl White, her only true competitor, worked solely in the East), and well knew her own worth to the studio, Pathé. In The Adventures of Ruth, which came complete with a theme song, "Romantic Ruth," Roland played Ruth Robin, a young girl searching for a peacock fan containing a secret that could change her life. Herbert Heyes, a former leading man to Theda Bara, was the rather ineffectual hero, rescuing lovely Ruth from the perils concocted by LaFarge (Tom Lingham) and the treacherous Countess Zirka (Helen Case). Future Western star Al Hoxie, still known under his real name, Alton Stone, doubled for Roland in a few carefully concealed instances.
