The Russian Revolt in the Desert is set somewhere in Turkestan. Aina, the heroine, is the daughter of Maham, chief of a nomadic tribe. Defying her father, Aina breaks away from her people to attend school. Thoroughly indoctrinated by the Communist Party, she returns to her tribe to apply new Soviet methods to her tradition-bound homeland. Ultimately, she overthrows her despotic, backward-minded father and triumphantly establishes a collective-farming system which catapults her tribe into the 20th century. American critics were amused that the heroine seemed a lot more "masculine" than any of the male characters.
