The influential independent filmmaker Samuel Fuller (1911-1997) is the subject of this 1989 documentary, which follows him as he travels around Europe, cigar in hand. Along the way, he reflects about his movie career, his war experiences in the U.S. 1st Infantry in World War Two, and his newspaper career. Fuller was a revered figure in European cinema; he moved to France after having endless difficulties with American film studios. His first career was as a newspaperman, later he was a screenwriter and then a film director. In between shooting films and feuding with the studios, and after moving to Europe, he also made many appearances as an actor, particularly in the films of Wim Wenders. Among his better-known films distributed in the U.S. were The Steel Helmet, The Big Red One, and Merrill's Marauders.
