In the fall of 2003, someone taking a walk through a peaceful section of rural Holland made a shocking discovery -- the partially burned body of a teenage girl. The remains were identified as sixteen year old Maja Bradaric, and in time it was discovered that she was strangled to death by three of her friends, who then burned the body in a failed effort to hide the evidence. What prompted this shocking act? Filmmaker Menna Laura Meijer, whose previous work for television has examined the sometimes startling inner world of teenagers, explores this horrible crime and the circumstances that caused it in her first full-length documentary Sweety: The Friends, Betrayal and Murder of Maja Bradaric. The film combines the thoughts of key figures in the case with re-enactments of the crime, and attempts to answer the question of not just how the murder occurred, but why. Sweety: The Friends, Betrayal and Murder of Maja Bradaric received its North American premiere at Toronto's 2009 Hot Docs International Film Festival.
