Director Gao Wendong explores the tender relationship between a young prostitute and an unemployed man living in Sweet Food City - a depressive section of a northern Chinese city fallen into a hopeless state of disrepair. Sweet Food City is a place where most buildings appear to be falling apart due to the fact that citizens frequently cannibalize the structures in order to repair their own living spaces. For a young prostitute and a man in search of meaning, the dilapidated surroundings seem to serve as haunting mirror images of their crumbling souls. But now as the pair spends their days eating together, folding origami, and watching television in harmonious silence, a fleeting spark of hope reveals that the future may not be as predictably grim as they always assumed.
