Like his other eight releases of 1908, George Melies' Stolen Witness is no longer in existence. The plot gets under way as two young men battle for the affections of a pretty mademoiselle. When war is declared, one of the suitors marches off to the battlefield, while the other becomes a war correspondent. When the soldier is entrusted with an important message, the correspondent -- still bitter over their romantic rivalry -- seizes an opportunity for revenge. The correspondent steals the message and hands it over to the enemy, resulting in a bloody counteroffensive. The two men are reconciled when both land in a field hospital -- where, by an extraordinary coincidence, their mutual sweetheart is serving as a nurse. Stolen Witness was released in the U.S. through a collaborative arrangement between Edison and Biograph.
