Director Peter Ostemyer, who briefly cornered the market in German "outdoor" dramas in the mid-1930s, called the shots for Standschuetze Bruggler (Sharpshooter Bruggler). Based on a novel by Count Bossi Fedrigotti, the story takes place in the Austrian Tyrol during the 1915 Italian invasion. Adhering to the region's ancient laws, all able-bodied males -- both young and old -- are summoned forth to protect the border from the invading hordes. Forsaking his dream of studying for the priesthood, 17-year-old Toni Bruggler (Ludwig Kerscher) defends his homeland, only to be wounded in battle. During his convalescence, he falls in love with young war widow Hella Von Tuff (Lola Chind), setting the stage for an intensely emotional finale.
