Native American children attending school on Montana's Crow Reservation are urged to celebrate their unique cultural heritage in a poetry class featured during this film. The children are shown writing poems about their ancestors and tribal customs. The narrator contrasts this teaching approach with the far harsher one that once existed when young Native Americans children were strongly discouraged from speaking their native tongue and learning about their special ancestry and traditions. Sixth graders Bruce Big Hail and Heywood Big Day III talk about what they're learning and why they're proud of their tribal heritage.
