From what can be gathered by reading contemporary reviews, Spectro was a pulp-novel master criminal, able to adopt any disguise at a moment's notice to outwit the cops. Filmed in Italy, Spectro at the Hour of Midnight finds the "hero" literally slipping through the clutches of the Law at each and every turn. Out of respect for the heroine, who is in love with the chief detective, Spectro never resorts to murder, merely humiliation. Since this was the first chapter of a five-part serial, be assured that Spectro managed to escape such certain death situations as a high-speed car chase and a fierce gun battle. While the film was enthusiastically received in Europe, it was treated with somewhat less than respect by American audiences, who hooted and hollered every time Spectro outwitted the somewhat dense authorities.
