Hopama (Ethel Clayton) is a girl of uncertain parentage who has been raised in a strict Shaker community. Her spirit gets a brief chance to break free when Camillo (David Davies), an old violin player, comes passing through. He plays a tune and Hopama seizes the violin and repeats the song, almost exactly note for note. The amazed violinist invites her to study with him any time she wants. Meanwhile, Scott Mallory (Frank Mayo), a wealthy young man who lives near the Shakers, becomes paralyzed while he is trying to save his fiancee Faith (Pinna Nesbit) from drowning. Faith leaves him and he sinks into a depression. Scott's mother (Zadee Burbank) visits the Shakers and invites Hopama to her home. Hopama, it turns out, is the one person who manages to restore Scott's happiness, while a famous doctor cures his paralysis. Mrs. Mallory doesn't want a romance to spring up between the two, so she tells Hopama that Scott is still engaged to Faith. Upon hearing this news, Hopama runs away and finds Camillo. She becomes a concert soloist, which is how Scott manages to find her again. Then it is discovered that she came from a good family after all, so she and Scott can marry without scandal.
