Smoking Lesson is the story of Theresa Louise McCauley, who is fifteen years old and would rather be called Tare, and Tom Delaney, an older man in his twenties. It revolves around the death seven years ago of a girl known to them both and the ritual and magic that Tare created around her loss. The play takes place under a railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi from St. Paul to Minneapolis, a place inaccessible to parents. In this place Tom takes Tare on a tour of the more standard rituals, the ritual of smoking, the ritual of seduction. Tare gives Tom another shot at the innate ritual of adolescence, leaving home.
