Several white actors appeared in blackface in the Vitagraph melodrama Slave Hunt. Sick and tired of watching his mother suffer at the hands of a cruel plantation overseer, a young slave kills the "boss man" with a well-aimed stone. The woman takes flight, with a band of white cotton planters in hot pursuit. Chased to the precipice of a high embankment, the slave commits suicide rather than return to bondage. Although the film was sympathetic to the black protagonist's point of view, Slave Hunt still trafficked in the racial stereotypes common to films of the era.
