In the days when Woodrow Wilson's campaign for a second term bore the slogan "He kept us out of war," the neutral stance that this film took toward the European conflict (it had not yet become known as World War I) was considered politically correct. William Berner (H.B. Warner) is an English spy who is doing his job behind German lines. While working for the allies, he proves sympathetic toward a German Lieutenant (George Fisher) and saves his life. He gives up his own romance for the cause and is killed when the Allies shell the German trench where he happens to be.
