C.S. Lewis (Joss Ackland) is an Oxford academic in his 50s, riding high on the success of his series of "Narnia" children's books. When he begins corresponding with an American, Joy Gresham (Claire Bloom), Lewis surprises himself by falling in love. They marry, and Lewis becomes father to two stepsons (Rupert Baderman, Rhys Hopkins). But his happiness is tested when Joy is diagnosed with cancer. Now Lewis, a devout Christian, suffers through a crisis of faith.
