Bavarian-born filmmaker Franz Osten departs from his trademark socially minded rural dramas to make this mythological melodrama based on a story in the Mahabharata. Though the famed artist and son of a blind hermit Satyavan (Ashok Kumar) is fated to die young, beautiful Savitiri (Devika Rani) -- who was sired through the divine intervention of the god Ashwapati -- marries him anyway and soon births Yama, the god of death. When Satyavan does die, Savitiri beseeches her son to not only resurrect her husband, but also to restore the eyesight of her father-in-law.
