This incredibly plot-heavy Eclair two-reeler gets under way at a Halloween party, somewhere in the Wild West. It is established that two cowboys are in love with the same girl, and that the girl strongly prefers one man over the other. Years pass, and the lucky cowboy and the girl are now married, and the parents of a little girl. The cowboy's former rival in love pays a visit, and is greeted effusively by the wife and daughter, though the cranky husband wants nothing to do with the visitor. When the husband heads off to work his mine, the rival shows his true colors by making passionate love to the wife. The illicit couple makes plans to run off together, but the scheme goes awry and the rival is subdued and tied up. The trusting daughter releases the rival, who then escapes, stopping only to kidnap the kid so that he won't be followed. But the husband insists upon pursuing the escapee, and as a result, collapses in the desert and dies. Even more years pass, and the now-elderly rival attempts to rekindle his romance with the equally aged wife, but this time he realizes that his presence will merely cause more grief for everyone concerned -- including the now-grown-up daughter, for whom he has developed a sincere paternal affection.
