In this routine film dealing with Poland's unique problems at the end of World War II, it is 1946 in Pomerania, and life has just gotten complicated for Lt. Andrzej Kmita (Jan Jankowski). He has discovered that one of his old Partisan buddies is among the forest-dwelling, post-war bandits he is supposed to combat. To make matters worse, Andrzej falls for a woman who has thrown her lot in with the bandits. In addition, Andrzej is assigned the task of getting people out to vote (most are hiding in fear from the local bandit armies), a thankless job, about as daunting as his own personal issues.
