Edward Sheldon's play was filmed several times; this one was the first. Nell Saunders (Beatriz Michelena) grows up in a rough tenement family. Her father (Clarence Arper) kills her mother (Nina Herbert) in a drunken rage and then is himself killed in a barroom brawl. Left on her own, Nell becomes involved with Jim Platt, a thief (William Pike). He winds up in jail and she is taken in by the Salvation Army where she undergoes a spiritual transformation. Meanwhile her friend Myrtle (Irene Outrim) goes the other route, becoming the mistress to a wealthy old roué (Frank Hollins) only to fall back to the gutter. Eventually Jim gets out of jail and after Nell helps him to reform, they are wed.
