It should surprise no one that the 1955 documentary Russian Holiday was produced by a Russian film company for propaganda purposes. The film concentrates on the previous years' Physical Culture Day ceremonies in Moscow. Practically everyone who appears on screen is a tip-top athlete, including the dancers who perform in honor of the holiday. Beautifully lensed in color, the film is a showcase for the traditional costumes of the many countries, states, and provinces which were then part and parcel of the U.S.S.R. At 80 minutes, Russian Holiday could have used a bit of trimming before its brief American release.
