The critic for the trade magazine Variety was moved to comment that Romance of a Gypsy Camp was better than the usual fare from the Philadelphia-based Lubin Company. Returning home after "one too many," a young man wanders into the woods where he meets a comely gypsy girl. The two immediately fall in love, which does not rest well with the girl's volatile gypsy lover. Challenging the young man to a fistfight, the gypsy rival administers quite a beating, but when the dust settles it is the now-sober hero who emerges the winner. Even so, he is seriously injured, prompting the girl to seek out the boy's parents and apprise them of what has been going on. In her absence, the rival gypsy prepares to plunge a dagger in the hero's back, but the heroine returns in time to dispatch the villain with a well-aimed stiletto. Just when it seems as if a happy ending is on the horizon, the young man is reunited with his wealthy fiancee, prompting the heartbroken gypsy lass to resort to drastic measures.
