Judging by contemporary accounts, it would seem that no one expected the Portuguese Ribatejo to be as successful as it was. The story, simple in the extreme, is set in motion by a nasty ranch foreman, played by Alves de Costa. The plot is merely an excuse to display the scenic wonders of Portugal's Tagus region, and to show off some of the country's finest horses and fighting bulls. Rustic comedy is provided by Vasco Santana, while the musical interludes are in the capable hands of Herminia Silva. As popular as Ribatejo was in Portugal, it was even more so in Brazil -- where, of course, there were far more potential ticket-buyers.
