Stunt-man Cliff Lyons -- billed for the occasion as "Tex Lyons" -- starred in this very late silent Western, one of six produced simultaneously on location in Kernville, California. Advertized as "based on an actual '49 happening," Red Gold told a none too revolutionary story of half-brothers -- Lyons and Burt House -- fighting over both a mining claim and leading lady Ione Reed. The top-billed Lyons came out the winner in both instances. Although low-budget to the point of ridiculousness, the Lyons Westerns fulfilled their mission: supplying remote theaters not yet equipped for sound with easily digestible fare plus making a few bucks for poverty row producer Morris R. Schlank, who released on the not very lucrative states rights market.
