This documentary focuses on one of the many intractable religious conflicts that color life in the Indian subcontinent. This particular disagreement, which has resulted in many violent incidents, concerns a 16th-century mosque in the city of Avodhya. Some Hindu legends seem to indicate that the site the mosque was built upon was the birthplace of the avatar of God, Ram. As such, it is a holy place for these believers, and the more militant among them feel that the mosque should be torn down and replaced with temples. The Moslems, naturally enough, object that this attribution is legendary and they already have claims to the site for themselves. Furthermore (though this is not much discussed), they object to the idea of having a site devoted to the worship of the One God, Allah, turned into a polytheist temple. The controversy over this mosque has become a national issue in India, and secularist moderates have steadily been losing ground to religious militants on both sides.
