Female journalist Titanya had quite a time of it while trying to put together Promenade en Chine (A Trip Through China). Upon her arrival in Shanghai, she journeyed up the treacherous Yang-Tse river by gunboat then travelled by foot to Tibet. Though there was some governmental resistance to the notion of a white woman being permitted to venture into the Mainland, Titanya was able to cut through a great deal of red tape by virtue of the fact that she was once a lady-in-waiting to the Empress of Japan. Still, the authorities would not permit her to carry traditional camera equipment, out of respect for those Chinese citizens who believed that a photograph was an affront to their religious beliefs. As a result, she filmed most of Promenade en Chine with a lightweight Bell & Howell, allowing her more flexibility of movement than might otherwise have been possible.
