The ravages of World War I were being strongly felt in Europe by the time this picture -- based on the Victorien Sardou play, Patrie -- was released: It was shot on location in Louvain, Belgium, and many of the background exteriors were subsequently destroyed in the fighting. The story involves a war of times past, when the Netherlanders were struggling to free themselves of Spanish rule. A patriot (Henri Krauss) who is defending his country against the Spanish, is deceived by his wife with another man. The man is a good pal of her husband's, and to split up their friendship, she claims that her lover is aligned with the enemy. The husband tragically dies at the stake for his country. The film was beautifully hand-colored -- not wholly uncommon in 1915, but still a special treat.
