Known around the world as one of the most prominent cultural groups in the nation of Burma, the Karen people began vying for national independence in the late 1940s - a fight that extended well into the 21st century, thanks to impositions from the military junta government in Burma. In this unique sociocultural documentary, writer-director Matt Blauer examines the Karen with extreme intimacy and attention to indigenous sociocultural detail. The film also witnesses Blauer making illegal border crossings to help relief workers assist refugees displaced by the Burmese army. In his journeys, he encounters such individuals as a pastor occupied with documenting violations of human rights, and an orphaned nurse attempting to aid escapees.
