Also known as A Generation of Conquerors, Revolutionists was the third solo directorial effort by Russian screenwriter Vera Stroyeva. The story takes place in the final decade of the czarist regime, as the oppressed peasants begin to assemble under the revolutionary banner of Bolshevism. The abortive 1905 rebellion is conveyed symbolically, using gunfire, shadows and close-ups to encapsulate this momentous event. Emerging as the heroine of the revolution is Varvara Postnikova (V. P. Maretskaya), who sacrifices her own life to decimate the Imperial guards. Unlike many propagandistic productions of this era, Revolutionists is leavened with a bit of comedy relief involving a group of quasi-radical college students.
