In Hollywood from 1909 onward, the Selig company maintained its own ranch, replete with a full complement of genuine cowboys. One of the studio's employees at the time was future western star Tom Mix, who may or may not have appeared as a background player in Pet of the Big Horn Ranch. The title character is a prize horse, who is stolen by bandits early in the proceedings. The pretty owner of the Big Horn Ranch is informed that, unless she pays a $1000 ransom, her horse will be as good as dog-food. Hoping to impress the heroine, the ranch foreman offers to deliver the ransom himself, intending to overpower the villains. Alas, the exact opposite happens, and the foreman finds himself the target in a shooting match between the rustlers. Fortunately, the heroine has sent out a rescue party, bringing the film to a slam-bang conclusion.
