Pepote was one of several Spanish entries in the 1956 Berlin Film Festival, where it was both highly honored by the judges and well received by the viewers. The title character, played by Pablito Calvo, is the seven-year-old nephew of aging toreador Jacinto (Antonio Vico). Long past his prime, Jacinto is given one final opportunity to shine in the bullring. Since the old man lacks the necessary funds, Pepote sets about to raise the money. Upon making his appearance before the aficionados, Jacinto finds himself the object of ridicule, breaking his grandson's heart. A climactic cloudburst brings the proceedings to a doleful finish. Though Pepote is hardly upbeat entertainment, the relaxed, natural performance of newcomer Pablito Calvo brightens every scene he's in.
