Somewhere in Algeria, a well-known Algerian actor meets a Japanese lady who wants to adapt for the stage a tale of an oulema’s journey to Japan at the turn of the last century. Looking through the mirror of Japanese success, this theologian ponders over the fascination that the “Arabo-Muslim” world has for the West and the reasons why it failed its own modernization. From Algiers to Cairo, from Istanbul to Kyoto and Tokyo, our two characters ask themselves these same questions one century later while they travel, exchange, and reread their own past.
