The physically handicapped were still regarded as a rich source of humor when One-Legged Man was released in 1908. The hapless title character is left to hop about helplessly when a thief steals his crutch. While escaping from the authorities, the villain manages to pilfer several other modes of locomotion, including a bicycle. Ultimately, the thief is surrounded by a crowd of angry pursuers, who justifiably beat the daylights out of him. A critic for the trade magazine Variety understated the case when he opined "It's not humorous to watch a one-legged man hobble about" (at least it wasn't in those pre-"gross-out comedy" days).
