Nicaragua Was Our Home is a report on the tragic plight of the Miskito Indians, whose villages have been razed and who have suffered terrible human loss as a result of “mistakes” now admitted by the Sandanista government.
Filmed in secrecy by Lee Shapiro over a five-month period, including clandestine travel from Nicaragua to Honduras, the life of Miskito Indians is documented as they struggle to continue their fight in spite of hopeless odds. Shapiro documents the escape of Bishop Schlaefer and Bishop Shafer, along with 2000 other fleeing Miskito refugees, all fearing for their lives, in what became an international incident of great embarrassment to the Sandinista government. A unique contribution to our knowledge of the situation, the film seems to raise more questions than is answers.
