Photographer-cum-filmmaker Joanna Vasquez Arong helms the documentary Neo-Lounge - a vivid dissection of the titular Beijing hotspot, where hundreds of internationals who have come to temporarily reside in Beijing cluster on a nightly basis. Deftly and systematically, with occasional doses of comic relief, Arong etches out portraits of numerous regulars at this locale, such as the Bulgarian Dilana - an aspiring actress and singer who performs nightly musical numbers before enthusiastic attendees, meanwhile pining for her big on-camera break. Over the course of the film, Arong also sheds light on two demographic groups: the decadence-hungry immigrants who occasion the club, and the native Chinese who may frequent Neo Lounge after dark but spend their days eking out a meager, pathetic income many miles from the city center.
