An intriguing look at the changing roles of work and church in the small Dutch village of Rijen, this documentary raises issues that are universal. The mainstay of the village is the tanning industry which began at the turn of the 20th century and particularly prospered during World War II. Old photographs and the testimony of elderly men recall the hand-and-glove relationship between the Catholic Church and the tanning bosses. Any tanner who did not show up for Church service on Sunday morning could be fired. Cut to the present and young tanners emphasize that they are in this for the money, while the Church has become almost irrelevant -- not only in the work place, but in the society as a whole.
