The title of Eduardo Félix Walger's documentary Mothers in fact refers to 'The Mothers of the Disappeared' - a group of tightly-knit Argentine social crusaders who sport white scarves in protest of a horrifying shared tragedy. For decades, organized terrorism at the hands of the Argentine government involved abducting small children from families, to spread fear and intimidation among the locals. As a form of grassroots activism, the matriarchs in question (all of whom are bereft of their sons and daughters thanks to this crisis) decided to band together and confront the government about the horrors plaguing them. With Mothers, Walger both creates a portrait of this group and pays homage to the indomitable strength and courage of its members.
