In 1950, Akira Kurosawa shocked an international audience with the vibrancy and innovation of his masterpiece Rashomon. The plot, based on a short story by Ryunosuke Akatagawa, concerned eyewitness accounts of a rape and a murder, each being drastically different from the last. In this go around, Kurosawa's masterwork is remade into a star vehicle for two of Asia's most popular leading men. Half-Japanese, half-Taiwanese heartthrob Takeshi Kaneshiro, who rocketed to fame after starring in some of Wong Kar Wai's pictures, here plays the wily villain; Japanese actor Etsushi Toyokawa plays the husband; and former Takarazuka star Yuki Amami debuts as the wife. This film, which was not the critical success of its predecessor, was directed by Kenki Saegusa.
