As indicated by the title, this Pathe fantasy-melodrama runs quite an emotional gamut. What is not indicated by the title is that much of the film was shot during a real-life Parisian carnival. Amidst the gaiety, a gloomy note is introduced as the Angel of Death roams through the streets. The revellers assumes that the Dark Angel is merely wearing a costume, and entreat him to join in their merrymaking. Alas, Monsieur Death has several other appointments to keep -- and keep them he does. Mirth and Sorrow was originally released in tandem with Different Trades in Bombay; both films were originally distributed in color-tinted versions.
